Allright, let us assume that cone speakers are not perfect for a variety of reason, and let us also acknowledge that I have no experience with field coil cone drivers (soon, but not yet). Let us also make clear that I began this current audio path because of the sound I heard coming out of my friend's Martin Logans being driven by a pair of Mc 275's. Let us also make clear that among my material possesions, the only speakers on I would consider pulling from a burning building are my Quad ESL 57's (actually I might go in for the Jensen RP302A's first, they are, after all, easier to carry;>). Now please allow me to make a comment, biamping or not, there are allot of parts between that speaker input and the panel. I love the sound of electrostatics,, the dimensionality, imaging, and percieved clarity, and in at least the case of Martin Logans that I have heard, the midrange. Having said that, I would build myself a couple of simple open baffels, and play around abit. One thing that you may notice is that some of the electrostatic qualities come form being bi-polar, some from NOT being in a box. Again, I am NOT trying to say one speaker approach is better than another. I am just trying to say, that after playing with field coil compression drivers (like the Altec 287's and WE 555's, which, unfortunately, I was too poor to keep. Actually, I will take my "two girls" over any pair of drivers any day.) and fooling with at this point a couple dozen "full range" cone drivers, in both OB and "big, sealed boxes," I have come to the cobclusion, once again, that I mentioned above: Speakers have a profound effect on the sound, and in this context, "neutral" is a reference point, not a physical property.Take care,
Rodney
