1) Directly heated or indirectly heated? DH tubes warm up pretty quickly. Indirectly heated tubes have a longer delay before applying B+ to your expensive signal tubes.2) Current rating (average and peak) - it is adequate? The peak rating affects the amount of capacitance you can load it with in a cap. input filter.
3) Peak Inverse Voltage (PIV) - how much reverse voltage can it withstand.
4) Voltage drop - is it acceptable?
5) Physical size - will it fit?
6) Filament/heater current draw/voltage - will your mains transformer filanet winding supply enough current? At the correct voltage.
7) Price
8) Does it look cool?
In your example, the 5AR4 is indirectly heated, has a lower voltage drop and lower filament/heater currentthan a 5U4G. The other electrical parameters are comparable.Cheers,
Pete
