I get the gist of what jay is saying tho..Its assuming you leave the amp stock with no modificaiton, you shouldn't run 6550s in an el34 amp but you can the other way around without mods..The reason is the 6550 is harder to drive than an el34 and you know if the amp's circuit can drive the 6550 we know it can drive an el34.Also the tubes in the el34 amp are typically biased at about 50ma each where as a 6550 is usually biased at 65 to 80ma each.Thats an additional load on a power tranny that was built to handle el34s so I dont think I would chance it in stock form.
