I can chime in on 5751s in the SP6

I've been playing with numerous tubes in my SP6. It came w/ Sovtek 12ax7 LPS, which I did not like. The Japanese Philco/westinghouse 12ax7a sounded much better to me. Then I tried GE black plate 3mica 5751s and felt they were MUCH better than either 12ax7 - more delicate , as Bambi says. Refined tops, and also tighter in the bass I thought. Till last week, I was using these in my SP6.

A solo Mullard 12ax7 did nothing for me. GE grey plate 5751s were better than all the 12ax7s, but not as good as the GE black plate 5751s. A solo Sylvania 5751 (1st tube of the line and phono stages) was decent, comparable to the GE grey 5751.

The 5751s sound good in the phono too, as they are quiet. But, the gain is down. The 5751s also sounded better than the telefunken 12ax7s that came in my SP3 (but I thikn these are late 80s teles, no diamond, and paint is very good - does not come off). So, till last week, I was using the Sylvania 5751 in phono 1st tube, and a 80s tele 12ax7 in the 2nd position.

I just recently bought a terrible condition Leak ST-50, but it came with old Telefunken 12ax7 with the diamond on the bottom. And they are fantastic. I only have 3. I've put 1 into the first stage of the phono, and 2 into the 1st 2 line stage positions of the SP6. They are more detailed, richer, and dynamic, compared to the GE black plate 5751.

Samir.
