I am currently using an early Russian 6n14p tube with great results.My ST-35 has had a complete overhaul. New PC boards, all new components. The only actual part that remains is the 95 Ohm cathode resistor.
Performance with the early Russian 6n14p is rock steady. I have to agree that the ST-35 pushes normal EL-84 a bit hard.
Maybe NOS 7189's work better?
I have found that standard Sovtek EL84's need to be carefully matched so that they don't current-hog with ann 4 cathodes tied together via the 95 Ohm, bypassed resistor.
