If you want to skip several levels of quality of sound and go straight for the ultimate, then start collecting DHTs and don't even bother with anything else. I now have two DIY fanatic friends who like myself - after collecting all kinds of stuff for years and years - only buy DHTs from now on. I used to think they were on some kind of esoteric trip until I started using them as input tubes in preamps and amps, as well as driver and output tubes in amps. When I heard DHTs right through the chain, it was a case of the point of no return. There was no way back. The usual place to start is 26, which is the most plentiful and cheap on ebay. Search on this and the Tube DIY and the K&K forums and you'll see various line stage designs. Below is one example.
