Mullard ECC83(long plate), Telefunken ECC803S,Amperex Bugle Boy, and TFK ECC803S etc. are considered by many people as the best 12AX7 tubes because we all have our own preference and bias to one over the others. There may not be the best 12AX7 tube but the Brimar CV492 is near to be the perfect canditate. It has supurb transparency and a wide and deep stereo image with pin point focus. It has a clear separation between instruments. It is airy and rich in harmonics. It has a hugh dynamic swing across the entire frequence range. If you think Mullard is excellent in this department but then the Brimar is exposive and awesome. I do not know if the Brimar is the best because I,ve got the privilege to listen to and compared all the other great 12AX7 tubes available in this planet. Please don't take my words for it but prepare for the sonic shock to your listening pleasure if you can get one.
