Fishstink, I've had pretty much the same results with Sylvania 12AX7's. I found them to be a little brighter than the Mullards. That's a good thing in the homebrew amp I built. The Mullards were very good, but the Sylvania 12AX7's opened the top end up quite nicely and retained great detail without being harsh.I'm using them in the input/inverter stage and on a whim I put in some Sylvania 12AT7's in the driver stage that followed and it was one of the few "Ohhh, WOW!" moments that I've ever had. Don't know if it is that synergy thing that people speak of from time to time but Sylvanias in the first two stages worked very very well.
I've also had a few RCA X7's that was very nice but I usually stick with the Sylvanias most of the time.
