Re: RCA 6FQ7 - Cleartop vs silvertop

I've just listened through about 22 entirely different variants of the 6CG7 and 6FQ7 used in the driver/phase splitter position of my CJ Prem 12s. The exercize underscored for me that EVERYTHING makes a difference, AND EVERYTHING has to work together in a system.

6CG7s and 6FQ7s can sound very different from one another - at least in my system to my ears (kinda lame standard disclosure). And I'm sure they'd all sound different in another system - different ears, different gear, different room, different everything.

Do you have a sonic character you're after? I could share with you the sonic character I've found with the 6CG7s and 6FQ7s I've listened to - I took "tasting" notes for each one. Perhaps there's some transferable sonic fingerprint, even a slight one, from that that might help you choose the right 6CG7/6FQ7.

What's working right now in my system are: early, flat, gray plate, D-getter Sylvanias; stepped, gray plate Sylvanias WITH plate shields (these are more "neutral" and very detailed, but not lean or harsh, interestly enough; I really like these); RCA cleartop 6CG7s WITH plate and filament shields; GE 6CG7 with full shielding, and GE 6FQ7s with the round holes at the plate bends and the filament bridge. The various CBS/Tung Sol/GE (I'm not entirely sure who made some of the tubes in this "group") with the black and gray plates, and 2 and 3 mica flavors, can sound good, too.

Most of these, though not all of them, tend to be on the softer side. This seems to do a nice job of taming the forwardness the Magnepan 1.6s can exhibit.
