Greetings college scholar,
Some supersonic values for the money that I'm aware of:
Amp: Sonic-T amp (digital, but sounds so good who cares, cheap besides), or vintage Marantz 2230 receiver (fabulous value and SS sound, if you're so lucky to happen across cheap, good match for small speakers).Speaker: Vintage Radio Shack minimus 7w (wood veneer, made in Japan). You may find other vintage yard sale bargains out there as well -- consider weight/build quality and condition.
CD front end: Any decent personal CD player, or one of the cheap Toshiba (SD-3960), Panasonic, etc. DVD players that play cd's too.
Headphones: Grado SR-60, Koss PortaPro.
