some of the best deals these days appear to be older tube consoles that are being tossed in the dump mainly because they are far too large for many of today's smaller living rooms.Inside these old Magnavox, Curtiss-Mathes, Motorola, RCA type consoles lurk small push-pull and single-ended amps. Some aren't that hard to remove, restore and use, although you'd have to do some final casework to make them fully presentable. You'll get them cheap, though.
Mind you, some of them aren't worth pulling so you might want to learn more about them before getting involved.
Since you're in college, what's the degree? If its engineering, you're in luck. BTW, this is the way I learned, too, tearing out old gear, taking it apart and learning how it worked.
