Thanks for all the advice, especially from a member who posted detailed instructions on tracking down an arcing connection. Unfortunately that post disappeared after a few hours.

I reseated all amp tubes and cleaned all connections. I took out my NOS 5687s in the preamp and sanded down their pins carefully (they had a nice 1/2 century old patina) and cleaned then with IPA. I also swapped the tubes channel-wise in the preamp.

After this the "pop" or "tick" noise went away. When I stop the CD player and listen closely to the speaker tweeters, I now seem to hear VERY faint "pop" discharges, once in a great while, from the other channel than before. It appears my NOS tubes are beginning their journey to oblivion. But since the noise is now VERY faint, they may have a long life left nonetheless.
