Sounds like you're taking about the filament support springs. If they're rattling around in the tube, the tube is dead. You'll probably have the remains of the filaments in the bottom of the tubes too.Thoriated Tungsten filaments are notoriously brittle, especially after being used for a period, because of work-hardening.
I once had a batch of GM70 all arrive like that :-(
