I tend to avoid collectible tubes and buy underrated tubes that sound a lot better than the price would suggest. Stuff like loctals (7N7, 7AF7, XXL, 7C5, 7F7) and single triodes (12b4, 6S4A, 6AH4, 1626, 2C22). None of these have really become collectible, despite the fact that they are all damn good and leaps and bounds ahead of all the 12A*7 tubes you could ever amass in a lifetime. None of the above are rare, almost all are regularly overlooked.
