Curious, why are you limiting yourself to EL34-based amplifiers?I am completely enthralled with the sound of my little Fisher 400 receiver. Amp, preamp and tuner on one chassis, utilizing 7868 output tubes. Has a very balanced sound, very dynamic and it images surprisingly well. Sounds great playing everything from jazz to head banging rock. Readily available on eBay for a few hundred dollars.
I have to say that I have never actually heard an EL 34-based amp, but everything that I have read on this tube indicates that it is very warm on the midrange. I had a McIntosh MC-240 with 6L6GC outputs that had a sound like this, and find that I much prefer the more balanced and "correct" sound of my 7868-based Fisher.
Just my $0.02.
