Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Citation Rework?

That amp looks pretty decent, the 6550A on the far right is shot but otherwise it looks good. Plan on refinishing the trannies, it makes a huge appearance difference. Replace the top panel hardware (especially the brass screws) if needed, that too is a big help. With some elbow grease and a good automotive cleaner/wax (I use Meguiar's) it'll look darn good.

As far as the money goes (and assuming you do the work yourself), without tubes figure about $300-$350, with tubes add another $185.00 or so.

You can plan on replacing every cap in there, the diodes, the AC line cord, the AC balance pots, maybe a socket or two (I see the octals have been replaced), the RCA females, and about 35-50 resistors that have drifted out of spec. There will be some toasted wire too. I suspect the bad 6550A was damaged by running away, that may have done damage to the wiring/socket.

I included my Level II Plus upgrade in that calculation BTW.

Whether you want to go with my stuff will be something I'll let others comment on, but I will say I like to keep the layout and feel of the amp as close to stock as I can.
