I believe when the grid is aligned 90 degrees out and the open grid faces the seam, you have better heat dissipation. The hot spot will be centered on the seam and thus have more metal to dissipate the heat.
That being said, there are those who believe that the gap in the seam gives a time differential ( almost infinitesimally small though it may be) in the signal passing through the grid and stiking the plate. I personally do not think much of it, since the parallax differences of the plate to the cathode is probably greater, but that was told to me by someone advocating the smooth plate telefunkens a long time ago.
