Orientation of grid support rods to plate seams

Different mfg of the same tube type # will exhibit different orientations; i.e. the grid support rods & anode seams may all be in the same physical plane OR the anode seam plane will be perpendicular to the grid support rod plane. Why such physical discrepency in an identical type # ? The 1st orientation would seem to align greatest emission with the smoother area of anode & with the later aligning greatest emission along the anode seams (apparently that is not problematic as some power pentodes display such construction).
