Hi LarryDD :I hope that you don't mind me using your name in this manner?. I understand your point, as I myself belong to about 5 different International Forums out there and would often view the opinions of others regarding tubes which they all consider those of merit and by far it's alway the same old 3 brands - Amperex - Mullard and Telefunken's as most of these versions which people tend to be over emphasising about are the lesser versions produced during the 60's and even if they are somethings to like about them, there's still to my ears better to be heard.
Yet many aren't aware that either a Long Plated Version of Amperex or Valvo with D - Getter NOS 50's are more then capable of making these tubes sound less then attractive.
Most Asian Countries appear to think that many American tend to crave only the Tubes made here during their heydays - and to many of these guys I respond by saying why not? didn't RCA create the 12A Family of signal tubes, so whom better then them would know just how said tubes were meant to be designed?. I seriouly consider many European Tubes to be a tad bit to Neutral and find that many of them tend to lack warmth - I'll be the first to admit that TFK 12AX7/ECC83's to tend to last forever and are in fact much quieter then many American Made 12AX7s - which is why many Companies here when on to make the 5751 Tubes as an alternate to allow for less noise and gain overall, yet even these tubes can at times leave one wanting a little bit more energy and/or gain as they seem to alter the dynamics somewhat @ least to my ears. As someone whom attends a great many Concerts all over Michigan as much as 21 said Concerts per year, I do think that I do have some ideal about what Instruments are meant to sound.
As I've learned to listen to Instruments for what they do as far as just how they resonate and are picked - bowed and/or strummed. It's all secondary once we all begin tomunderstand they we all are merely attempting to capture the Illusion of said sound through our systems and in fact we're all a long ways off from what is reality in the end, as compromises will always exist which with only add to one going through a life long cycle of Upgrading their systems as opposed to simply putting one together as a more synergistic and systematic whole. It's nothing more then learning to tailor one's system to the sound which pleases them most, is it not?. I mean while some might consider Wilson Watts the end of all speaker Designs - I say give me a pair of just about anything made by Marten Designs and I'm content for life. As I've never heard any of the later Sylvania 12AX7WA Grey Plates due to the rap which they receive here as only being great 12AX7 in Guitar Amps, [ The person whom sold me the 8 pairs of CBS Tubes had mentioned this issue as well. ] I've never been curious about them until your response - in which case I shall attempt to at leasr hear a pair of them in my system prior to passing judgement as many tend to do.
I just more then anything wanted to make other aware of just how nice these tubes seriously are - seeming that nothing much has even been said about them here or anywhere else that I've searched to date. I just thought they deserved a little more credit than they have received and nothing more, but then again as with all matters as they relate to Audio YMMV. Yet Universal acceptance for the Amperex's the Mullard'sand Tele's of the world - makes me believe that many simply haven't had the opportunities to hear many of the versions which Legends are born - namely the Long Plated Versions from European Countries and many of the better versions made right here at Home.
Just food 4 thought and nothing more or less. Thanks for chiming in with your response, as I'm still learning myself - as are we all it would seem.
Regards,
- Oscar
