After trying most of the so-called "Holy Grail" 12AX7s, I came across a pair that embody everything I want in tube sound. My tube of choice is the humble Sylvania 12AX7WA. I think it's a terrific tube and I'm grateful that it doesn't have the AmTeleMul hype driving up prices.I have two CBS tubes, a near dead 5U4G and a 5814. The latter is interesting. It's labelled Amperex Made in USA but based on the internals is clearly a late 50s CBS 5814 - at least what I can tell from on line photos. It's a very nice tube.
