One can sub a 6AU6, but the gain is quite reduced. The older NOS Westinghouse 6136 with 5 stars are very high gain for a 6AU6 type. Everyone I tested pegs the meter on my tester. It is ok for a 6HS6 sub with some less gain. The 6HS6 is on the MIA list I posted a few weeks ago. Best find a few spares right away as these are getting quite scarce. The 6HR6 (remote-cutoff version) are even more scarce than the 6HS6.
DO NOT purchase the Mullard 6HS6 that appears from time to time on eBay. They are actually relabeled 6BZ6. The plate area is small on a 6BZ6 compared to the 6AU6 plate.
