6922 types

parasound, there are plenty of decent (not great) new production 6922/6n23 equivalents you can try. The Electroharmonix 6922 is reliable, and there have been good comments about the JJ E88CC. The JAN Sylvania 6922 is an inexpensive NOS type and sounds OK. Dealers like tubestore.com, tubedepot.com and triodeelectronics.com have these.

As to the pinout differences btw. 6922 and 12**7 types, it is actually only the heater connections that are different. The 12**7 types can run on 12V with heaters in series, or 6V (much more commonly used these days) in parallel. The 6922 pinout puts 6V on what would be the series connection of the 12**7, so it gets only half its normal heater voltage.

Of course, tube operating parameters are just as essential as the pinout, and as noted, the 12ax7 has much higher gain and higher plate resistance than the 6922. The 12au7 is closer, but you still have the wrong filament voltage.
