Back in the day they would use the speaker an oscillator, amplifier, and an oscilloscope to measure the waveform to get a frequency response.
To measure impedance, they would use the speaker a resistor an amplifier and an oscilloscope.
This was time consuming compared to today's methods in the early 70's impulse response measurements came about and that has led to today's methods.
LEAP was my first exposer to crossover design. Pocket clio is what I use now or a Dats V3 and an Omni mic. I like Clio but I get the same results with Clio or the Omni mic & DATS. Once I have my FRD & ZMA files I use a lot of different software to design the crossover. Some really good free software out there today also.
Like you said it has never been easier to take good measurements thank goodness for technology.
