It's my experience that it is generally a BAD idea to go messing around with a commercial speakers design especially a company like Definitive. The xovers in the speakers are carefully designed and tweaked for the specific drivers being used and it would have to be sheer dumb luck to find a replacement tweeter that would work with the present x-over components. IF you manage to find a pair of the same speakers with blown drivers at a garage sale then feel free to experiment with the cabinents but you are shooting in the dark without xover design software like the offering from Harris Tech.
In addition, the drivers that Definitive uses look like Vifa units but are probably custom versions with higher/tighter specs than what you might buy from Madisound or others.
Having said all that, I find aluminum domes to be not harsh sounding as much as revealing/sensitive to components upstream. They also are somewhat unmerciful of bad recordings. I have some speakers I built years ago from Vifa aluminum domes and they are very 'airy' sounding on very good recordings but they really make crappy old vinyl recordings (like most rock albums from the seventies!)sound like a chainsaw in your ears.
The silk domes used to be employed by Def Tech but they had a lot of customers with blown tweeters and some reviewers found the speakers lacking upper definition...go figure.
