Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

You need better and/or more powerful amps for this speaker.

98.17.1.4

Minimum 250 wpc at 8 ohms with a load of current into low impedance loads. Stereophile measured this speaker at 84 dbm. Impedance at 90 hz was 2 or 3 ohms. The highs can become shrieky on this speaker using an underpowered amp that is approaching clipping. Is the blame with the speaker because it needs more juice or the amp because it is underpowered?

Next, the amp must be more transparent than, for example, a Bryston 4BST. How do I know? I lived with this combo. A Musical Fidelity amp, like an A3CR for example, will provide more clarity and transparency.

I believe the gold i had some improvements in the port as well as narrowing the enclosure.

I won't deny that there are definite amp and room synergy issues with this speaker. Still, it was rated Stereophile class B for years and is still competitive IMO if one uses the right amps and sites the speakers in a large enough room.
