A bit more than 10 years ago, a club I was in did a fair amount of playing around with small/cheap "fullrange" drivers in open baffles. The first thing I noticed, and the impression that has stayed with me most strongly, was how much a speaker sounds like what it is made of. Plastic cones sound like 2-liter soft drink bottles. Aluminum cones sound like tinfoil. Paper cones sound like cardboard. The ear/brain system is well adapted to gather information from sounds, and the nature of the source is a major piece of information. You can hear - and identify - the difference between wooden and silver flutes, too...
