The initial Silverline Sonata and Sonatina speakers weren't on the market long because of a design patent dispute with another speaker manufacturer (names withheld to protect the guilty). The second generation came out during the interlude when that was all being settled. Same drivers and crossover, similar cabinet design, just without the faceted corners that seemed to be the basis of the dispute. Now that the third generation has been released, the Sonata II and Sonatina II (and the discontinued Panatella II) can be found on the used market for less than 50% of their original price, and they are an unsurpassed bargain. Not only do they sound as good (or better) than the version I or version III, the IIs have a subdued, elegant design that is as attractive as any large size floorstander ever produced - as an architect it is necessary for me to be sensitive to my clients' (and my own) opinions on appearance as well as sound quality. As an added bonus, they are 93 dB efficient so are a wonderful match with SET tube gear. Admittedly it's been a few years since I seriously shopped for speakers, but I compared them with comparably priced speakers by Dynaudio, Von Schweikert, Aerial, Soliloquy, JM Labs, B&W, Legacy, and Meadowlark, and in my system the Silverline Sonata IIs kicked everybody's ass.
. . . in theory, practice and theory are the same; in practice, they are different . . .
