Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Re: Sealed vs. Ported speakers in medium sized room.

This is a gross generalization, but IMHO

sealed boxes
-are inherently more "tight" sounding in the bass
-more inefficient and less loud than similarly designed ported boxes
-less subject to room colorations than ported boxes
-easier to integrate with a sealed box sub than with a ported sub
-easier to integrate with any sub than a ported box
-have a fuller accurate bass response, but will not go as low as ported boxes
-are more accurate in their bass detail than a ported box

(and the one that will get the Inmates a-flaming;)
sound more tonally "right" than a ported box.

Ok, that firecracker having been lit, I am currently using the Devore Super 8 (ported) with a REL Strata III sub (sealed) to good but not perfect effect. The REL is nice and tight (if not completely extended) on the low end, and the Devore sounds warm and a bit loose on the lowest notes, but with considerably more dynamics than the sealed box speaker it replaced.

If amplification is not a consideration, and any bass issues caused by the room can be treated or avoided, I would tend to opt for the sealed box over the ported box (both speakers and subs) in a music only system.

Of course, unless you listen only to bass, focusing solely on the bass response is a silly way to shop for speakers, as so much of a speaker's contribution to system enjoyment occurs above 150hz. That is why the Devore is such a delight, for what it loses to the sealed box competition in bass clarity and definition, it more than makes up in the upper bass, midrange and top end.
