Re: diy subwoofer advice

Personally I'd go with the Dayton speaker. This strikes me as an excellent subwoofer as does its 12" counterpart. I like the combination of low Qms, very low Vas, low F3, high power handling capbility, large excursion, and the price is very reasonable IMO. The new 15" version seems less desirable to me as do the Titanic III drivers. The other drivers you specified IMO suffer by comparison. The Peerless has a much higer Qms and for a given box size will result in a higher Q system, not desirable for music. The design goal should be a system Q of 0.7. This will give the most extended response without a peak. A higher Q may go lower but will have a FR peak which will be difficult to equalize away. A lower Q will have tight bass but it will not go as low. Be careful of aluminum woofers, they have a tendencey to have a FR peak at higher frequencies which must be filtered out. Many of them have this caution specified in the Madisound catalogue. BTW, I spoke with Parts Express about this woofer recently and they will give you all the details you need to design your subwoofer/enclosure. They have enclosures available or you can build your own with their technical assistance. If you build a sealed woofer (my preference) the amount of stuffing will be important and if you substitute a different type such as fiberglass, the optimal amount could change. The stuffing is a critical element in tuning the driver/enclosure combination to get the optimal Q.
