The books are already spaced kind of irregularly, stuart. Different sizes, heights, etc. not all packed in solid.There's probably 6-8 feet between each of the speakers and the nearest sidewall.
And, given their size limitations (standmounts with 6" midwoofers), it really doesn't make sense to try and pump out average levels too much above 85 db from them anyway. Compression starts becoming evident much beyond that point. So the room works very well at those sound levels, and, since it has a big opening on to a large hall way that is wide open to the other two very large rooms in the house (living room and dining room), room resonances in the bass region are pretty limited.
At some point, I may buy more potent speakers, but these have lots of other virtues.
