The Section's "Forward Motion"

I was lucky enough to pick up The Section's "Forward Motion" at Tower before they went out of business (Tower, not The Section, smartass).

Released in 1973, these guys were like a jam band before there were jam bands. Lots of keyboards, but everyone gets to stretch out at some point on the record. There's even a brief drum solo, called "One Drum" (no, it's not), and a spacey bass solo. Auger-like fusion rears its head on "Bullet Train" and "Forward Motion," and there's some pretty groovin' other moments, man.

And look at the players! Danny Kortchmar on guitar, Craig Doerge on pianos, Moog and organ, Leland Sklar on bass, and Russ Kunkel on drums. Wikipedia sez: They appeared together and individually on many albums of the 1970s, particularly those by Crosby, Stills and Nash, James Taylor, Carole King and Jackson Browne, and acted as back-up band on their tours. Don't let that fool you- they aren't as laid-back here as you might think. :^D

I'm sure some of you have this record lying about, maybe their other releases, "Fork It Over" (rel. 1977) or the self-titled first disc (rel. 1972)? If you've got one or two, drag 'em out & see how well they've aged with time. "Forward Motion" sure has- I wish I could find the other 2 on CD.

I'll bet they stretched these songs wayyy out, live. Anyone seen them as The Section?

Next up: The Fents!
