When I first heard about "polyrhythms", just the other day, I mistook the definition as something done discretely- A drummer, using coordination alone, playing two different meters simultantously and independent from each other, sounding like two distinct musicians. I was skeptical about such coordination being possible, but the misconception led me to this wonderment of existence. Which was of course not the case. My skepticism was reality. The few tracks that I thought such execution may have occurred was either an integrated beat or multiple musicians.I now know how it really works- The use of a fast common beat to integrate multiple sub-beats, which create the polyrhythm. Keeping track of which beats to use or accent amongst the fast beat. No extraordinary feats of independent coordination necessary.
