Pretty much the same playlist at PNC Arts Center last night, except for the addition of "Water", which Pete turned upbeat by omitting my favorite lines:You can cover up your guts,
But when you cover up your nuts,
You're admitting that
There must be something wrong.Nobody projects like the The Who outdoors. Saw them at a peak doing Who's Next at Saratoga Springs in '71 & at the Garden in '73, when Moon was overweight & sloppy. Garden acoustics sucked then and now. At PNC Palladino sounded huge and authoritative. Zack Starkey is a wilder drummer than his dad and close enough to Keith Moon to forget dull Kenny Jones during the It's Hard (It's Not) last throes. Daltry's voice held up amazingly well. Always modest & the cheerleader, he introduced the new material by remarking "We've finally done it-- well Pete's done it, actually-- after 24 years, a great new album." He may be right. The new material that sounded weak at the Hyde Park concert this Spring had been retooled and sounded great-- particularly the Elvis homage "Real Good Looking Boy." A really refreshing blast.
