A friend talked me into seeing Hedrix at a small club in Philly in late 67 or early '68. The only thing I had heard by him were different and strange to my ears. My 18 year old ears were forever changed after seeing him live.
After King Crimson's second album I had sort of written them off. I saw them play at a venue in my home town of Wilmington, Delaware in 1972 and was amazed. They are a different band live. I have an LP which includes some of that concert and I see them whenever I can.
I went to see System of a Down with my son expecting standard heavy metal fare. They rock hard and well, but what really got me was their sense of humor and the political content of their music.
Mars Volta was the opening act for Ststem of a Down. What little I'd heard was hard to listen to. Live, they are great. Their complicated music completely captured me live. I can still only listen to them at home when I pay close attention.
