a "Gedanken" experiment: Carole King & the Dead?

OK, this isn't meant to be terribly profound, but I like Carole King as a songwriter and a performer (she's an awful singer but she's so EARNEST it's hard not to like her). One of my favorite Carole King songs is "Smackwater Jack". You likely recall that he was the one who, "in the mood for a little confrontation", bought a shotgun and "shot down the congregation".

I always though that the story and lilting shuffle of that tune would've fit the Dead's repertoire very well. Can't you imagine Jerry wheezing out the lyrics?

"The account of the capture wasn't in the papers
But you know, they hanged ol' Jack right then, instead of later
You know the people were quite pleased
That the outlaw had been seized
And on the whole it was a very good year
For the undertaker"

:-)

all the best,
mrh
