OK, this isn't meant to be terribly profound, but I like Carole King as a songwriter and a performer (she's an awful singer but she's so EARNEST it's hard not to like her). One of my favorite Carole King songs is "Smackwater Jack". You likely recall that he was the one who, "in the mood for a little confrontation", bought a shotgun and "shot down the congregation".I always though that the story and lilting shuffle of that tune would've fit the Dead's repertoire very well. Can't you imagine Jerry wheezing out the lyrics?
