Well, I haven't listened in long enough to be able to say there was any playing that caught my ear one way or the other...but that may not mean much. I certainly don't remember anything along the lines of what he did during his finer moments with the Who, but I guess it's time to pull this one out again. What I do remember was that it just sounded like he just wanted to record a few songs. I don't know anything of any backstory to the record, but if it was done just for the hell of it, it would hardly surprise me (as opposed to a different type of Who solo rec like Entwhistle's Smash Your Head Against The Wall).I do think he was the best rock drummer ever, but that he's an icon is something I can't say I much care for, given that so many seem to have seized on the aspects of his playing that fly in the face of what I've always considered drums to be--a rhythm instrument. He was the busiest player I've ever heard, that I actually like. But, man, did he inspire a bunch of players I can't stand.
