I'd go in a heartbeat if it were possible for me. I'll let others comment on the music lineup as many likely have more experience there (though I've heard recordings by most of the bands, I haven't heard them live except for Ford). There are a number of stellar breweries participating though. Aside form the 'big names' (e.g. Newcastle, Sierra Nevada, etc) there are some great smaller companies, many of which are from the So Cal San Diego area (home to me). Among the best of these are
Stone Brewery - For HOPHEADS! Their Arrogant Bastard Ale is heaven IMO. The release of the seasonals (e.g. Double Bastard, Old Gaurdian Ale, Imperial Russian Stout, etc) are high points on the calendar for many people (myself included).
Green Flash - named for the optical illusion you see on the Pacific Coast just at sunset. Their "stock" brews are pretty good, but their Anniversary Ales are really something special - particularly the 2nd Anniversary if you can get it.
Ballast Point - brewery that grew out of a home-brew store. They brew a wide variety of ales, and an occasional lager. Most are full bodied and not over-hopped. Really tasty, and great guys as well.
Pizza Port Carlsbad - restaurant brewery. Original store is in Solana Beach, and was originally tied with the same guys who do Ballast Point now. Similar beers, thought Pizza Port will come up with more specialty brews.
AleSmith - originally specialized in belgian-style beers, but they've expanded. Again, their specialty beers are the tops. Horny Devil is very good, and is a great example of a Trippel. The Stumblin Monk was one of my favorites, but is no longer made. For non-Belgian try the Speedway Stout.......very dark and good. Most of their specialty beers pack a whallop though (10 - 12% ABV)!
There are also some very good No. Cal. breweries that are gonna be there: Anderson Valley, Marin and Moylan's are each very good, though I favor the Anderson and Marin breweries over Moylan's.
IMO there are only two breweries on the list that aren't exciting: Alaskan and Karl Strauss (Strauss is local here in S.D.). I've got a good friend who refers to them as "digital beer" and I think he's pretty accurate.
I'd certainly go to the festival if I could. Should be a great time, and not only for the beer!
An expert is someone who knows no more than you but is from out of town.
