Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs is a fantastic album. I hear a little Beatles, Beck, Leonard Cohen, and even Radiohead (think Thom York without the falsetto) in this one. Solid song writing, very interesting orchestral arrangements, and excellent vocals characterize Andrew Bird.I also second Damien Rice.
For something more upbeat, I give another second to the Arctic Monkeys, and I also really like the New Pornographers right now, although this wouldn't be a recent discovery for a lot of people who post here.
