I believe that in the years between the MoFi and the DVDA the original tapes were located.I have hundreds of "audiophile" recordings, but (somewhat reluctantly, given my investment) have also come to the conclusion that many of the lps are inferior to the original pressings.
This doesn't mean they were lying about the source. As another case in point, the Beatles MoFi series was the only time those tapes have been allowed out of Abbey Road. Definitely OMTs, but, while better than any prior US series, they don't measure up to the UK original pressings (and some argue later British pressings either).
However, as far as the cds are conserned, I've never heard a MoFi or DCC that did not exceed its red book counterpart.
