I haven't posted in awhile, but I just feel compelled to chime in for a minute. Blame it on an over-indulgence in alcohol, and the fact that my wife is watching a completely boring GA-TX football blowout, currently 23-0 (zzzzz). I was listening to Carlos and company absolutely wailing on Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock, and what a pivotal moment in rock that I think it was.
It's F%$^&**# spectacular. The energy is palpable. Carlos has said that due to the chaotic nature of the scheduling at the festival, he was peaking on mescaline when they hit the stage. I am still riveted by every note, as many times as I have heard it. I was just listening to the audio, but I plan to watch the video again soon. As I recall, there is a great split screen passage where an intellectual (and very stoned-looking) blonde girl is hanging on every note, while on the other side of the screen a rather earthy looking brunette is enthusiastically rocking out with her, ahem, ample bosom heaving rather impressively. Showcases the universal appeal of his music nicely! The Gibson SG I have always thought of as the quintessential acid rock guitar.
Awesome bit of timing. Santana's first album hit shelves the same month, and the rest is history. A stellar music career was born.
I love late '60's rock, and this has always stood out as a pivotal moment. along with many others. I also point to the Yardbirds "Train Kept A Rollin'" as the moment I think Jeff Beck invented hard rock lead guitar. I was lucky enough to see him live in Atlanta six months before he passed tragically from bacterial meningitis. These, of course, are just my opinions, and YMMV.
