My friends and I are in our early 50s, and have known each other since we ourselves were in high school. So that is our identity. And yet, in the blink of an eye, now our kids are in high school and college.
Our education, college or not, turned a blind eye to middle age. Just as we were ill-prepared for adolescence, we have not been given a road map, for navigating middle age. So we have to take the initiative, do our own research, and ask our elders for help, advice, and guidance. Peri-menopause is upon us, and you see how that alters your friends' perspective, of what it means to be a woman.
As for popular music, my writing partners and I do like to select artists, who are not that well-known. Or, if the artists are well-known, then we dig deeper, into their more obscure (and often better) material. We like to put the music in context of where we were, what we were doing, when we first heard it. And we never ask anyone to like (or dislike) the artist and/or its music.
