I posted this since I was wondering if the violin sonatas and partitas had an early champion, as Casals did for the cello suites. It seems hat there certainly were some champions, although the recordings came rather slowly. Ilearned from the site listed below that Menuhin was the first to record all of the sonatas and partitas (although not at once).
The Szigeti is still very special for me even though is technical (but not his musical) prowess was diminished.The Szeryng is very special, as are the Milsteins (both of them). I was thinking about these works again having pulled out Kremer's second recording - to my taste a touch to formal and stiff. I am hoping Hilary Hahn will provide the set for this generation.
