Admittedly, I'm not the most well versed in the jazz world, but I wouldn't consider myself illiterate either. Regardless, I never heard of Phineas Newborn until I saw a used copy of "Harlem Blues" on CD. Great melodic piano playing, emotive and can make those ivory keys swing as well. With Ray Brown and Elvin Jones backing him up, this has turned out to be a great find (good recording quality to boot). I can't believe I never heard of this guy before! Anyone else make some recommendations of what other Newborn recordings I should explore?
