Mendelssohn and Brahms composed "new" works during their lifetimes, that were inspired by those of J.S. Bach (whose music had languished in obscurity for 200 years).Surely, the music of the past can still function as a source of inspiration for the present.
Many "classical" artists were never recognized or understood by contemporaries (I am listening to Robert Schumann right now, and as much as he is loved today, his compositions baffled contemporary audiences) but their music inspired later generations.
I am sure that the same kind of artists are busy now producing works in obscurity that will one day be "discovered" by future artists and a future public. Visiting many college campuses all over the world the past ten years, I have met thousands of unknown composers (many students) whose work has yet to find a public. I am sure that their legacy will one day be recognized.
