There are many theories as to why certain Cremonese string instruments sound so good. And even with instruments from Cremona, there is a narrow timeframe for the sweet spot. One interesting theory is that the wood used in that particular period was denser than wood available in other periods because an earlier mini "ice age" that lasted about 75 years resulted in slower growth of trees. The wood grain of these instruments are finer (slower growth) than that of instruments made at other times, and this corresponds with other evidence of a sustained cold period.
