I guess that it was kind of the beginning of that quintet TW travelled with at the time. The popularity of the record you excerpted kind of made him realize, they say, that he could make a go of it as a leader with an acoustic group, outside of the all- star, VSOP context. He "stole" WR from the then- current version of the Jazz Messengers.In came Billy Pierce on sax and a succession of fine bassists- Charnett Moffett. Bob Hurst, Ira Coleman. It was an extremely popular club and festival circuit draw, as I recall, and the quality of the music was also exceptional. TW would often start each set with an extended snare drum solo- he'd bring it down front and just play all that sh*t he could play, and it would be so mysterious and intelligent and musical (they say he cribbed from some Swiss Drum Corps book- wow). One of my favorite groups to see live at the time, and the memory stays...
