Todd,I realize that much of what I'm talking about is personal taste, - no right and wrong... It's just my opinion that people like Patricia Barber, Herbie Hancock, David Johannsen, Ojos de Brujo, Peter Gabriel, - have the same quality of recording, but more pathos, emotion, power, and variety, - and also write their own songs.
Using Krall to test a system is a poor all around test. Getting the timing right on Topper Headon's kick drum pounding out a speedy, low, full, beat, is much more challenging than a more midrange stand tom of DK's drummer, or her stand up bass player whose instrument isn't nearly as full range....
I've heard Tony Levin's chapman stick simply explode and sound like crap at shows where otherwise, people were impressed with how good Diana Krall sounded on that same system.
As far as a leader goes,... I have to disagree there too.... IMO, - she has really gotten into the game late as far as audiophile recordings, - people were into Original Master Recordings of Steely Dan and jazz on vinyl way back in the 70s.... and I'm sure it goes much deeper than that, especially with all of the amazing classical recordings going back once again, much further...
Sure we're a minority now, and we always will be.... And I'm just saying that I wouldn't have such an aversion to Diana Krall right now, if she wasn't overplayed at shows to the point of irritation...
Thoughts from above hit the people down below. There are people in this world who have no place to go
