You have put your finger on it. I had forgotten how relatively bad some of the old Melodiya LPs were. These CDs are all old USSR recordings, most with orchestral conducting by Kondrashin.So, in the light of this it is a tribute to Brilliant they have come out as well as they have. But although I cannot play them on the best equipment here, they are listenable on lesser gear so yes, the great music is enjoyable. Best to be philosophiocal and be thankful we have the recordings at all.
Similar situation with the Callas Cetra recordings - ghastly on LP but not too bad on remastered CD.
