It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: David Oistraka "Violin Concertos" - 10 CD set. Is the violin far too forward & "hot"?

I don't have this Brilliant set but I do have some of these recordings on LP. These were all made in the USSR, presumably by Melodiya, and I have found that in general Melodiya lagged behind the Western record companies in sound quality, especially in the 40s, 50s and 60s (I don't think this will come as a shocking revelation to the seasoned record collectors here).

Oistrakh recorded most of these concertos in the West as well as in the USSR. For example, only months before he recorded the Shostakovich 1st with Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic, he recorded it with Mitropolous and the NY Philharmonic on Columbia. The performances are equally great, but the Columbia record sounds slightly better, less harsh and compressed. Brilliant probably does as well as it can with the source material. There is a very good Oistrakh discography online if you want to look for Western alternatives.

However, the problem of the solo violin being too far in from of the orchestra is pretty prevalent in the East and the West, as other posters here have mentioned.

In sum, I wouldn't blame Brilliant. I have other Brilliant sets that sound very good. I would enjoy this set for the great music, and accept the imperfect sound.
