if you are classical newbie if you buy your choice you would be listening to something that may be held in high regard ARTISTICALLY but may turn you off due to the limited(poor)sonic qualities.have not done any looking so i don't know if there are any more up to date
LP cycles of Beethoven.if your a classical newbie you might be better served by buying a CD(!!!) boxed collection of the symphonies.i could recommend claudio abbado's latest with the Berlin Philharmonic/DG.Going back to the Toscanini if you can get a good sense of a good purchase price ,it may be worth buying on its OWN merits:Toscanini LP's in mint condition etc.But it may not be the most enjoyable introduction to Beethoven symphonies due to the technological downsides
